Music x Fashion, with culture roots holding by CRYSTAL LAKE’s Hardcore frontman, Metalcore roots with its own sound and worldview, overwhelming heat Live performances, Heavy and Loud. CRYSTAL LAKE who’s gathering a tremendous support from listeners of Heavy & Loud Music and also rising in popularity worldwide, the Vocalist of the band Ryo is an artist who cherishes fashion and culture closely connected with Music. We talked about Ryo’s Fashion roots and band’s activities.

RSJ : What kind of fashion do you like ?

Ryo : What I like is Black. But even though the whole body is black, I also put in play inside. I like playing with hair style, putting colors in the shoes I wear, matching accessories.

RSJ : How about Bands T-shirts ? You're wearing a T-Shirt of a band called GODFLESH today.

Ryo : Would not you like to appeal a band that influenced you? I like music, but I also like clothes through which you can see the background. To wear a T-shirt of a band is like wearing something that allows you to understand your identity.

RSJ : Do you have an artist who aroused your admiration as model, including on the fashion aspects, when you went into Music ?

Ryo : Heavy and Metal bands from the 90s. Like Machine Head. Not like wearing a leather jacket, but I like Music and Fashion at that time that is closer to the Street, more like wearing a decked top in size in a military pants. I was also influenced by the Fashion aspects of the Vocalist Robb Flynn (Vo. Machine Head) and Max Cavalera (Vo. Sepultura).

RSJ : What kind of fashion did you do in your teens?

Ryo : To match bands shirts with Skinny pants, this has not changed from the past. The first shirts I bought was Metallica and Rage Against the Machine. It's not blurred despite time (laughs)

RSJ : What are your favorite things in the Classic items ?

Ryo : I like wearing VANS and Dr. Martens since I was a student. Not the Classic Dr. Martens with 8 Holes, but a bit like unusual loafers and prints. I like things with a standard basis that change according to tastes.

RSJ : You're wearing a Skinny pants now, but it was « DABO PANTS » at that time that is was influenced in the 90’s, right ?

Ryo : DABO PANTS is about three-quarter length. But recently, I’m wearing extremely thick Dickies pants, like wearing something that brings out an old taste. The Large pants also increased recently. Even in my stage outfit, until now I used to wear Skinny pants, but recently on the contrary, It seems more appropriate for me to get a comfortable stance, so I thought that I could show it in a natural way.

RSJ : In April, when he came to Japan, Fred the Vocalist of Limp Bizkit was also wearing an awesome DABO PANTS, isn’t it?

Ryo : His ass was completely visible (laugh). I also like Limp and Fred was also a Fashion Leader, so I used to refer to him. Limp Bizkit came together at the same time with KORN that I really liked. It's a dark atmosphere, but it's super heavy and KORN’s fashion was quite different from the other bands. It was a top and bottom Dickies workwear, a whole body grey, and after I was attracted by the whole body Adidas. I thought « Can you be so cool with a jersey ? ». It’s not like Suchmos in me, but like KORN (laugh).

RSJ : I'd like to hear about Crystal Lake's future activities too.

Ryo : We’ve planned to release a New Album at the end of the year. From October, the family Tour « JMS presents BODY and SOUL TOUR » will start. After that, we will go on Tour in Europe again in November and December.

RSJ: Crystal Lake has a good wave right now, isn’t it?

Ryo : I feel it came suddenly even for myself. It is certain that the band is promoting more towards one goal than ever before. Even when we went on Tour in Europe, all bands were united and we went even further towards the goal there. I understand that we're not that kind of band who get into popularity at once in a boom. So even if it moves, I think that it’s better to increase it little by little to the stable state.

RSJ: The quality of the Single "THE CIRCLE" released on August 8th is also high and your Live performances are getting increasingly tight, right?

Ryo : I think this was gradually settled from APOLLO released last year. The things we can do because we are Japanese, what we can not do because it's not us, it's what our songs and the style of our Live performances are, considering things to change for going abroad.

RSJ : Does European Tour have a rebound or rebirth ? "Why can you tell me that you can do « Full ten » Live performances ? »

Ryo : That’s right. But that's what we've been doing since forever, and I think it's really our way of doing things. I want to shake it off so that I can sharpen it. Europe is originally declining in market, but we were good welcome more than I expected. We are surprised because we aren’t expecting anything there. I think Europe is looking for things that are not in Europe, not ordinary. This is what I felt.

RSJ: Crystal Lake is not only sound, but the worldview of RYO's lyrics is original.

Ryo : After all I can’t become a gangster and I can’t even feel poetic at all, so I'd like to write with my own words. There are Science Fiction novels and movies that influenced me so far and I really like fantasy. I’m constantly thinking about how to put those into real world. I also love myths and I also love Star Wars. I guess you are saying what you want to say. After all it is said that anger is the primary source. Why are you screaming? I’m angry because I’m thinking about this reason. I'm not dissatisfied with society, but I'm screaming because I accumulate anger every day. I think that scream is not interesting if it is not real. Because I want to express something that springs up naturally from the inside of me. I want to make something that you can listen to and feel. Looking back at the history of music, both Rock and Blues came out of feelings of such anger and cry, I think that I must take care of it the most.

RSJ: What are your plans for the future ?

Ryo : We will go on Tour and release the album, and I’d like to do One Man Tour for the release of the album next year. Then, we also want to go to America. In South America there are also many specific metal bands, and as a person who has roots in Sepultura or South American metal, I want to go there as well.
